ABOUT THE ARTIST
Over the course of his life, Alexander Hyland has established an artistic vocabulary that has explored through figuration to full abstraction. Through his instinctive need for travel, He has embraced different cultural identities and ideas that inform his artistic practice. “My paintings act as a conduit linked directly to my lived experience”
Using oil paint, watercolor, and ink, Hyland has developed an arresting signature style defined by strong contrasts in colour and powerful linework. Hyland’s work possess a fluidity, transparency, and graceful luminosity that mirror the energy and thought process of the artist himself. His paintings could just as easily be called meditations.
“For me, painting not only requires stillness and presence, but it is also the perfect vehicle for achieving such states. If we unburden ourselves from any preconceptions of what a painting ought to be- we open the doors to the true value of a painting…peace. “
For Alex, painting is a dynamic physical act that exists in one moment in time and when that moment is over, so to is the painting. He never revisits a painting. “I can’t just stand there in front of an easel and slowly chip away at something. Its not about the end product for me, its about the moment of creation itself and that moment is the thing I am sharing.”
